Academic Advising

Upon declaring a major in Criminal Justice or Police Studies, students are assigned a faculty advisor from the department. Our faculty take advisement very seriously and will see that you receive accurate information about course requirements, career options, and related matters; our adjunct faculty are also an excellent source of information about careers.
Each semester we conduct both group and individual advisement sessions on campus and at EKU's extended campus centers in Corbin, Danville, and Manchester, Kentucky. Orientation advisement is provided for incoming freshman in January and over the summer.
There are three basic sources of advisement information at EKU:
Departmental Advising
Once you have declared your major, your academic department is your main source for academic advising. In the Department of Criminal Justice and Police Studies, you can direct questions to your assigned faculty advisor (whose name should be listed on your CARES report), the department’s main office in Stratton 467 (859-622-1978; Natasha.cornelison@eku.edu)or any member of the faculty. You can print out your CARES report at http://www.advising.eku.edu/cares. Don’t forget that part-time faculty members can be great sources of information about career opportunities.
Our department holds several group advisement sessions during both the Fall and Spring semesters. In addition, you can meet individually with your advisor or the department chair anytime, including summer. We also schedule advisement sessions with the EKU extended campus centers in Corbin, Danville, and Manchester each fall and spring; please contact your center coordinator to find out dates and times of these sessions.
EKU Advising Office
The EKU Advising Office located in room 347 in the Student Services Building (859.622.2276) provides another option for academic information. You can visit that website at www.advising.eku.edu. This office is an excellent source of information about general education requirements and transfer of credit. The EKU Advising Office holds orientation sessions each January and each summer for freshman and transfer students.
Transferring Credit
If you are a transfer student to our program, we will make every effort to insure that as much of your previous coursework as possible transfers to our curriculum. Follow these steps to have transfer work evaluated:
- Apply for and gain admission to EKU.
- Declare your major in Criminal Justice OR Police Studies. You will then be assigned to an Dr. Ellen Leichtman as your advisor.
- Have each institution where you have completed credit submit an official transcript to the Office of Admissions at EKU (www.admissions.eku.edu).
To learn more about transferring credit, visit www.advising.eku.edu or contacting the Student Services Building 334 (859-622-2276).
