Criminal Justice & Police Studies

Master of Science in Criminal Justice

Program Objectives

Criminal justice is an academic discipline. Objectives of the graduate program are based upon the assumption that responsible social and public policy, decision-making, and reform in today’s complex society require a broad academic experience.

This education should foster critical thinking, a strong theoretical foundation, solid research methods skills, and an awareness of the key philosophical principles associated with the administration of justice.

Program Focus

A central focus of this program, then, is to demonstrate that the problems and issues our society faces with regard to crime, and our reaction to crime, must be situated within a larger cultural and structural context.

It is therefore expected that criminal justice graduates will be:

  1. Conversant with the theoretical and legal principles in criminal justice
  2. Knowledgeable of the essential research contributions in the discipline
  3. Capable of quantitative and qualitative research and data analysis appropriate to the discipline
  4. Competent to assume policymaking, research and instructional responsibilities in criminal justice.
